OUR PHILOSOPHY
KIDS AND SPORTS...THE IMPORTANT TRIANGLE
To have a successful, positive experience in any sport, there are three components that form the sports triangle...the Athlete, the Coach or Instructor and the Parent. Each part of the triangle is vitally important and must be an equal part of the whole picture.
THE ATHLETE:
The student athlete must be willing to try to meet the goals and objectives the coach/instructor has set. The athlete must also realize that there will be long term goals as well as short term and develop the patience and perseverance necessary to achieve them.
The very act of participating in an individual sport teaches a young person invaluable lessons that can be applied later on in the adult life and the athlete should develop a feeling of pride and success in his/her accomplishments.
Most importantly, an athlete should remember the importance of truly having fun while participating in the chosen sport. This can and should be a main focus during an athlete's entire athletic career. The greatest Olympic athletes manage to not only excel at their sport, but also to truly love it and have it be a constant source of joy and fun.
THE COACH/INSTRUCTOR:
First and foremost, a coach/instructor must be properly trained and experienced to teach the athlete's level of ability. This experience and knowledge can come from many different venues; academic education, years of prior teaching or being a former athlete or competitor themselves.
In addition, the coach/instructor must constantly participate in continuing education through seminars, work shops and teaching clinics conducted by experts in the field. In this way, the coach/ instructor is constantly learning new and better ways to teach all aspects of the sport.
In addition, the coach must go beyond the realm of just sharing knowledge. He or she must realize that a great coach is one who is not only a teacher but who realizes the immense responsibility that is bestowed upon them and makes sure that each child is looked upon as an individual with individual talents and abilities and that the coach is dedicated to helping each young athlete realize his or her potential in a realistic, positive way.
THE PARENT:
The parent's job is to support their child's endeavor in a chosen sport, not only financially, but emotionally. Any sport can have its disappointments as well as its victories and if looked upon as a part of the entire learning experience, even seemingly negative situations can be turned into a very valuable life lesson.
A parent should always make sure that the facility where their child trains has viewing of the class or practice session readily available. Proud parents supporting their child's endeavor by watching their child's activities and progress is a positive feeling for both the child and parent.
Parents should feel free to ask questions regarding their child's training, while respecting the coach/instructor's knowledge and experience. When there is a question, the very best source of information is the child's coach or instructor, as this is the person who can give you correct and accurate information. Other parents do not possess the knowledge your child's own teacher does. And above all, a parent's job is to be proud of their own child's accomplishments without comparing him/her to anyone else. After all, the most important child in the world is your own! At Horizon, we recognize the importance of the "Sports Triangle" and our entire program is based on its principles. Our goal is to constantly strive to make each component of the triangle an integral part of our philosophies and ideas.
